Monster Carp
« on: September 08, 2008, 09:22:00 PM »
I met an old gent today who said he caught a 35lber in one of the other lakes last year, should I believe him? Oh and he told me a lad caught a 37lb mirror in the bridge pond a while back, but there were only 2 of them on the lake and the lads camera wouldnt work. Oh yes; his parting shot:
"I've seen a carp in the great pond that was as big as you" (he pointed to me), I'm 6' 4" and 18 stone, think I best get some heavier line before I fish for that one!

Maybe I should stop fishing in the carp lake and fish in the other ones where all the realy big fish are?

Yeh I have seen the "car" up and dwn while I've been on the carp lake.

Might not be as far feched as it sounds other than the last bit. Years ago I did hear stories of 30lb+ fish at ravo but never seen anything to back it up. Might be intresting if any of the older guys would have some input on this and try and put some sort of picture together. You hear of carp croppin up all the time from different venues where they have not been caught for years and everyone thinking they were dead then out of the blue someone banks it.

I could see a hike in the permit price next year if one did crop up!!

I think I may have told you that I was fishing the great pond a few months back and something swam past in the margin as I was leaning forward to throw some bait in and it scared the s**t out of me! It was big, not as big as me but big.

I would like to know an official figure of how many fish there are in the carp lake and how many went missing after the flood.

Terry thinks we gained some.

I've actually spoken to Keith and Martin, who told me that a few months back, when in the boat doing some weeding, a carp swam under the boat that made them catch their breath. Keith has worked on the water for years, and said he had never in all that time seen a fish as big. They both admitted that as they were not carp anglers, they wouldn't like to speculate as to its weight, but were both adamant that it was a fish neither of them had ever seen before. It does make you think, and with the floods a few years back, who knows . . .

Take what 3 pin says with a pinch of salt! He's caught a 6lbs barbel from the big pond. Guess he doesn't know a 30lbs carp from a 6lbs barbel from a 1lb bream.
The biggest fish caught from the carp pond is 27lbs, verified, seen the pics. know the angler but he no longer fishes Ravo.
W.r.t fish in the other ponds another 20 is quite possible, (Terry had one). 6 years after putting fish into Burcliffe (no carp) 12 and 14lbs commons were netted and put in the carp pond. These were probably fry that got into Burcliffe as 'crucians'. Similarly no carp were stocked into the Gt. Pond when it was refilled and stocked, but there obviuosly are some and they've grown and spawned, a maggot man caught 6 little ones this summer!
The carp pond was originally stocked with ~40 of Ravo's biggest fish, without checking I recall only two were just 20+. some died in the first few years. Then some Simmonds fish were added plus a 19lbs common, but many of the fish we see today are home grown naturals. I don't know how many but I've seen more than 40 sunbathing. I suspect there are somewhere between 70 and 100. I'm told that last year there were more 20's than ever, but despite being asked no-one ever reports their catches so it's anyones guess.
The idea that carp were lost in the flood is rubbish. I watched and the water going over the dam was only inches deep, whereas that coming in was much deeper. We've certainly gained some, I've seen one, the orange koi type is from Firsby. We electrofished about 20 of them out of the Bridge Pond, 10/14lbs and like peas in a pod.

Maybe that thing in the middle of the pond isnt an island after all, it could be a big carp.
