Braid mainline
« on: December 27, 2009, 09:29:10 PM »
Does anyone use braid for mainline , if so what ? I was thinking that using something around 20lb bs which would have a lower diameter than 15lb mono , which would mean being able to use lighter leads/feeders . Is this normally the case ?

Ive got some theseus 20lb braid on one of my carp reels, it must be thinner than 5 or 8lb mono. I dont like it though to be honest compared to mono. I prefer the stretch in mono.

I got it for fishing amongst the lillies at ravo.

not cheap but dont think you can beat whiplash in 20lb its as thin as 4lb mono. when i fished for bream on the canal i used that with a mono leader so you would not bump fish off on the strike.

Ayup chaps, I've been using 20 and 30lb power pro for 2 seasons and it is superb. Very strong, the 30lb can pull snags in :-)

The cheapest way of obtaining power pro braid is from jamestackle in the USA, I originally found him via eBay but now I just order direct.  http://www.jamestackle.com/powerpro.htm

I know of 4 people who buy from him without any problems.

Hello Conrad , what's the diameter of that stuff compared to 15lb mono . Does it stand up to the rocks on the Trent or do you use some kind of leader ?

The 30lb stuff is considerably thinner than 15lb mono, so obviously the 20lb is better still. If you check out the james tackle site you can compare the diameters. It has good abrasion resistance but no braid will stand the rocks on the Trent without some rig tube. My latest leader is 2 feet of 40lb, black amnesia mono tied with an albright knot. I use a running rig with some beads that are tight on the line so I can set up a semi bolt rig but that will pull over the knot should I be unlucky enough to have a break above the leader while playing a fish. It's not happened yet, in fact I have not had any cut offs since adopting this method. I also use 20lb power pro for my hooklengths.

Power Pro is IMO the best, it knots extremely well and keeps its strength amazingly.I use 30lb for all my barbelling and yes it does pull up the odd snags. James tackle are good but i find it easier, thats if you have an ebay account, to simply type in; eg power pro 30lb, scroll down and you will find the international ebay sellers,. You cannot go wrong if its either purchased from Japan or the USA. Last i got was 500yd of 3olb PP for £25 delivered. Now thats a bargain.

It sounds like the stuff I am looking for , so when the time comes for me to spool up I'll buy some from my local tackle shop . Sure I'll get a brew while I am in there too .

I have to say I have always done my best to spend my money locally, but im being made redundant soon so I will have to shop around a bit more.

I'm going to be a field tester for Stu's baits, he just doent know it yet :)
