Ive had another today ex-forces, no skills what so ever only his army back ground. On a serious point what happening with these guys. It seams to me that the army takes the best years of there lives and then it's thanks but we have done with you now. Why are the forces not retraining these blokes to help them to continue with there lives once they are out. I know a lot do leave with skills they can use but what about this poor old tank driver ???

Waterpig is ex-forces so he might shed a little more light on it.

after doing 23 years 78 days [yep they tell you when you leave] I can tell you that you are entitled to a resettlement grant and course depending on how long you have served, but basically it is not worth much as you cannot be trained in owt in four weeks really for £2750. :-[
The retraining and job search is also contracted out, so they really are only there to claim the money off the army and give the squaddie a good old hug and tell about his tranferable tank driving skills. >:( I am one of the luckier ones, I can drive em, bend em and then mend em. 8)

I think fatdad pretty much summed it up you do get resettlement trainning but you have to have done over 4 years if i remember right(been 7 years today funnyly enuf)otherwise its nothing. I was lucky as i wo mechanic in army(5yrs 197 days) so it was quite easy for me to find a job that i was trainned to do  they also gave me hgv aswell so always had that to fall back on(my resettlement was with AA applied after but no job) I had a mate who left not long after me and trainned to be a plumber/gas fitter in 4 weeks when he left and got a job repairing boilers and really struggled to do it as he didnt have a clue but he had papers to say he could ???. It all pretty much depends on what job you did in forces to how it can help you out in civillian life you can be the best at what you do in the army(tank driver etc) and do really well and progress up the ranks but if you leave and havnt done anything else(thats recognised by a civilian employer) those skills are pretty much useless and your no better off than when you first joined its quite sad really i think this is why a lot of people leave then rejoin. I rekon the job centers just send people for interviews just to get there figures up and in the hope that they will get set on even if its not want they want to do or can do. I dont think you can go far wrong employing ex forces as most are willing to learn new skills and adapt its just a time thing for somone to teach them which is always a problem as times money.

Dont know about RAF airmen, but officers get 12 months of 'leave' to start looking for work and skills for what comes next. I agree with AndyO's sentiments, many skills in the forces leave people ill prepared for civillian life. Even pilots in the RAF have to get civillian licences before they can apply to airlines.

Maybe you could ask them to send you an ex navy chap, he could help me out with the bait boat finishing? It is after all painted grey at the moment so should feel at home working on it.

Got to admit it, really sad i know, but getting a brew on sat up out side a bivvy [5 star accomodation compared to a basher or trench with OHP] at 2-3am watching the water and wildlife does bring back a hell of a lot of memories ;). Its Always a bonus when you catch though and knowing that you can get your head down when you want as well ;D.

Since posting I have found two blokes that have the right papers and they start next week. However papers mean nowt and they might not be able to do the job once they are on the shop floor. I have had quite a chat with one of the exforces guys all be it via email but I am getting the right vibes from him. If one or both of these two don't work out I'm going to give this army one a crack even though he doesn't know the job, it just feels right for some reason which I can't put my finger on ???
